Spain is an important bilateral and multilateral partner for Germany with a broad consensus on basic foreign policy values and convictions, as well as an important economic partner. Germany was the number one country of origin for Spanish imports in the first half of 2023 (11%). Germany was the second most popular destination for Spanish exports (11%) after France (16%). The bilateral trade volume amounted to around EUR 47 billion in the first half of 2023. Currently, more than 1,800 German companies provide over 200,000 jobs (indirectly linked to around half a million). Around 5 million German tourists traveled to Spain in the first half of 2023. According to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), almost 116,000 German nationals live there permanently.
Exports and imports from both countries are on the rise. Not only goods are exchanged, online service providers and numerous renewable energy companies find good opportunities to expand their business in Spain.
